Background of the Study
Digital storytelling combines multimedia tools with narrative practices to create engaging content that supports language maintenance. Among Igbo youth, digital storytelling has emerged as a modern method to preserve and promote both Igbo and English language skills. By integrating images, audio, and text, digital storytelling allows young people to express cultural heritage in a contemporary format (Uche, 2023). This interactive process not only reinforces vocabulary and grammar but also strengthens cultural identity by preserving traditional stories and values. Research indicates that when youth actively engage in digital storytelling, they develop improved language fluency and enhanced digital literacy. However, challenges such as unequal access to technology and varying levels of digital proficiency can limit its effectiveness. This study investigates the impact of digital storytelling on bilingual language maintenance among Igbo youth, exploring how this medium influences language retention, cultural engagement, and intergenerational transmission of heritage narratives (Ifeoma, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite its potential, digital storytelling is underutilized as a tool for bilingual language maintenance among Igbo youth. Limited access to digital technology and insufficient training in multimedia skills often hinder the effective use of this medium, resulting in uneven language retention and cultural transmission (Uche, 2023). Educators and community leaders express concern that without strategic implementation, digital storytelling may not fully support bilingual proficiency or cultural preservation. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of digital storytelling interventions and proposing measures to overcome technological and educational barriers (Ifeoma, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of digital storytelling on language maintenance.
To assess its influence on bilingual proficiency and cultural engagement.
To propose strategies for enhancing digital storytelling practices.
Research Questions:
How does digital storytelling affect bilingual language retention among Igbo youth?
What role does it play in cultural preservation?
What interventions can improve its effectiveness?
